Kai Leon is on a life journey for the Alchemy

of Beauty and Science within

What does it take, to become a creator and an expert in a truly exclusive niche of individualized Perfumery?

It naturally begins with having the Olfactory Gift

– along with other subtle senses.

The path of love and appreciation

for the exciting scents of Nature

began for me in early childhood –

on long summer trips to the wild forests

outside of my city,

accompanying my father

who was an amateur herbalist –

to collect medicinal herbs,

and on the way inhaling for days

the majestic bouquet

of blooming Greenery in all shades

– of centennial firs and seasonal tangy grasses,

juice-bursting berries

and a plethora of delicate meadow flowers –

awe-inspiring scents

that last a lifetime of memories.

Then – still in the childhood – came into play my talent for Chemistry, in which I was a kind of prodigy.

By the age 16, in my home laboratory –

a fortuitous gift of my wise and caring mother –

I attempted to create my first perfume:

I successfully synthesized an aroma-chemical with the smell of Lilac from a paint solvent,

which demonstrated the importance of understanding the science of chemistry at the base of the fragrant Universe.

A personal search for answers

in the matters of Soul and Mind

led me first to studies and later to a successful career

in Holistic Psychology and Mental Health.

By happy chance I promptly found a way

to combine it with the field of natural aromatics –

in Integrative Aromatherapy, which ingeniously allowed me to accumulate practical knowledge

as well as to develop my natural talents and skills –

at the intersection of Biochemistry and Neuroscience,

of Aroma-Psychology and individual Diagnostics,

of Aesthetics and Beauty-Care.

Thanks to these gifts,

I engaged not only in a career as a therapist

but I was invited to teach Aromatherapy

in the academic colleges for Holistic Medicine,

as well as to work for a global supplier of

fine aromatic materials

as professional adviser and curator –

all at the tender age of 26!

These positions allowed me to deepen

my expertise in Aroma-Science for years to come,

as well as to mature in the practice of interacting with hundreds of students, patients and customers from a wide range of interests and backgrounds.

Such continuous work with genuine and natural aromatics of the highest quality,

along with my personal penchant for Finesse

have shaped my preference for authentic luxurious natural aromatics as the fragrances of choice –

in contrast to the industrially produced, largely synthetic and inherently cheap present-day perfumes of the mass market (read further in ‘A thought on today’s perfumery‘).

So the creation of personal perfumes was

a natural step in my evolution

– initially for myself only.

To perfect my Perfume Craft I’ve engaged

in intensive learning forays and

artisan apprenticeships in the

School of High Perfumery in Versailles (ISIPCA),

and of course in recurrent ‘pilgrimages’

to ‘the world capital of perfume’

– Grasse, France.

My aesthetic vision encapsulates my kaleidoscopic cosmopolitan life of

  •  living in six different countries on three continents,
  •  learning nine foreign languages,
  •  studying at several universities across various academic disciplines,
  •  switching interest fields ranging from Classical Music to Chemistry to Psychology,
  •  guiding cultural-historical tours around the Globe;

I gratefully consider myself a ‘Renaissance man’ –

a well-educated polymath and a multifaceted artist with a lifelong dedication to Art in its many forms,

guided by my unfading curiosity about World Culture and History,

and enriched by the continuous exploration of Psychology, Natural Science and Spiritual Legacy.

created in the spirit of the chivalrous Heraldry and richly symbolic coats of arms –

to reflect my Credo, along with underlying cultural connections and not in the least – the artistic whim:

And finally, an explanation of the brand’s logo:

In colors of Tyrian Purple and Gold, in the center of the shield-like vignette,

there is a fantasy beast, which I call ‘Sea-Lion’, that represents

a wordplay on my name:

one half – a sea creature akin a playful whale or dolphin, is standing for the direct meaning of my name:

‘Kai’ means ‘Ocean’ in the language of its Hawaiian origins, as well as for my deep connection to Sea –

both as a deep sensory experience and as a concept;

another half – quite literal roaring lion, is standing for my family name, Leon;

The sea-lion is attempting to grasp the enticing Object of Desire –

deeply symbolic and legendary Fleur-de-Lis –

a fragrant flower of glorious and intricate Lily,

an emblem replete with rich history since antiquity across many cultures and societies,

which stands for natural beauty, virtue of purity, eminence, royalty (and its anointment), wisdom and the noble ideal –

the essence of my perfumes;

The surounding organically stylized vignette is comprised of my name on both sides and the connecting lines above and beneath,

of the brand’s motto in Latin –

the language of science and the first Lingua franca:

‘Ars Odorata Sui Generis’ – ‘Fragrant Art, One of (its own) Kind’;

The vignette includes as well personally important symbols-

a musical clef ‘Sol’ – a conceptual tuning key – to create Harmony throughout all the scales; connecting Music and Perfumery as forms of vibrational Art;

a dual Ouroboros – a crowned winged dragon and a royal cobra chasing each other’s tails – a dynamic spiritual symbol of Yin-Yang (East-West, Feminine-Masculine) in the continuous mutual creation of the opposing yet complimentary elements,

which in turn circle around the alchemical symbol of Distillation –

a process crucial for Perfumery – to extract pure aromatic essences from the crude raw matter;

another alchemical symbol for Pure Essence represents the three-steps’ nature of its Extraction –

from raw crude state- through masterful and skillfull effort –

to its refined ethereal substance;

and lastly, the ultimate Alchemical symbol of Quintessence –

‘the Philosopher’s Stone’, also called ‘The Seal of Light’ –

a graphic metaphor for a personal evolution of the creator’s mind in search of perfection:

the central Circle stands for the initial ‘Void’ –

the subconsious place for all the Potential as well as for the initial impulse to create;

around it a Square – stands for the Intellect at Work by Will, a Knowledge put into Craft;

around it a Triangle – stands for Vision, Inspiration and Artistic Intention,

that lead to the final material Manifestation, represented by the outer Circle of Completion.

eventually arriving at Fine Art Perfumery, where I create ‘Aroma-Portraits’ – emotionally evocative fragrant fantasies or fancies, redolent masks and veils for the moments of life,

one-of-a-kind custom-tailored potions of vivid Imagination and refined Beauty.

As I had discovered and soon became well-versed

in the newly emerging doctrine of Aroma-Genera –

that explores the translation of physical Individuality into healing aromatic prescriptions

I combined it with my own knowledge

and experience in archetypal Psychology

and in holistic Diagnostics of Ayurveda

and traditional Chinese medicine; and voilà! –

making personally-tuned healing perfumes became my new consuming passion.
